Designing a Game World: Formative Submission
Premise
For my first project, I will be designing concept art for one of the main locations in a new RPG game. I have been given a list of prompts for the location and some ancient artifacts to influence the theme of the location.
Using the given prompts, I attempted to create designs of internal and external structures. One of my main ideas was to use the Tagar style pot with the witches cottage as it reminds me of a witches pot. I am using Tagar culture as inspiration when creating my thumbnails. My plan is to use earthy colours and make these structures very nature based, covered in moss and vines.
Artifact Culture Research
I found this very helpful PDF about Tagar style artifacts, this will help influence my designs.
Thumbnails
When creating my thumbnails, I wanted to follow the witches cottage prompt so I started out with sketches of what I want the general shape of the structure to look like. Since witches are often associated with mystery and fear, I wanted to make sure my design had a somewhat creepy design. I attempted to achieve this by using pointy shapes.
Whilst trying to incorporate the Tagar style, I noticed that they used a dog for the handle for the artifact. With this in mind, I tried to create statues of various animals as well as create objects with animal features.
One of the thumbnails featuring a witches broom with a snake shape for the handle itself. This is something I wish to include in my final piece.
I have also incorporated the way the artifact holds up into my designs. In ancient Russian folklore, they believed in a witch named Baba Yaga. Her witches hut stands on two bird legs which I found very unique and would be a very interesting detail to include in my designs.
I had experimented with trying to incorporate the artifact itself into the designs or even portions of it into other objects. I wanted to push the boundary with how I could present the artifact in my design by placing its features on rooftops, on a statue, or the shape of the building itself incorporating the design. I also tried splitting sections of the artifact, more specifically the dog handle, and placing them in my designs.
Below, I have included the process of my current thumbnails.
I found the entire process of thumbnailing quite challenging and I am struggling to meet the 100 thumbnails mark as I'm struggling with inspiration for my designs. It wasn't long before I was drawing the same things just positioned differently. I have decided I want to settle on an interior design, because there are assets that I would like to challenge myself to model.
My design of the witches cottage is going to have a cauldron, rocking chair, candle holder, potion bottles, a broom, picture frame, fireplace, bookshelf, and lastly, the tagar artifact.
This looks great so far, but I can't access your google drive files!
ReplyDeleteIt may be beneficial to do some more thumbnails where you incorporate smaller aspects of the teapot or some other shapes from the Tagar, rather than thinking of the teapot as a whole object that needs to be added. A few of your thumbnails already do this, such as the decoration on the towers. :)
ReplyDeleteIt's a great start in terms of research but you haven't embedded your google drive links correctly, make sure your giving public access to that shared file!
ReplyDeleteNice work with the concepts. Try maybe doing some small sketches of different objects and different variants of them to help fill up the concept sketches/
